With a million different lures to choose from these days, some anglers must wonder if another product, or type of lure is really necessary. I think it would be good if lure retailers or distributors could enlighten the public as to why they are stocking these products. We are hoping with this blog that we can explain the reasons and the benefits these products can bring to certain situations.

We have opened our shop with a range of Zipper products. These hand poured and injection moulded lures are outstanding quality. Some of the Jersey lads from the forum have been using these lures all summer to great effect, sussing out when and where they come into their own. We have found when targeting Bass and Wrasse that a light bullet head or weedless jighead is perfect.

The ribs on the Zipper Original worms make rigging weedless very easy, as you can just nip the hook point into a rib and being so soft the ribs collapse to show the hook very easily. These robs also trap air bubbles between them, a feature that many of us have noticed on other injection moulded worms and shads. This again has a couple of benefits, firstly it makes the lure lighter in the water, so if you are fishing light and not wanting the lure to sink too fast (mid water fishing) then this feature is very handy. Secondly if you are using the lure along the bottom the bubbles release on the first few taps along the bottom, and predatory fish are designed to home in on bubbles being released as they know this happens when small fish or creatures rummage around.

It may seem rather petty to mention things like bubbles releasing etc, but this is the difference between a lure working and not working on certain days. These tiny little features can make the difference on hard to catch days.

They maybe soft, but they are also strong, and can handle a few fish before they are destroyed. One day whilst out with Callum and Steve they both had a few Bass and Wrasse and all on the same lure, we were impressed.

We thought we would show you a couple of the ways these lures can be rigged, this is of course just a few ways and all manner of rigging techniques can be personalised for the anglers situation.

First there is the Zipper Darter Heads, these are lovely when rigged on the Zipper Curl Tail Shaker. It is easier to say it with pictures so here are a few we took to simplify things;

You can of course rig ribbed worms side on or flat side up, here we are coming through the ribs so we can tuck the point in more easily. Just work out where the bend needs to come out, its about 4 ribs in on the Curl Tail Shaker. Feed the hook through and work out where next to put the hook though and where it will exit.

Push the hook through and if required tuck the point of the hook into a rib or two. The point of the hook will release easily as a fish bites down on the lure.

You can see how neat it can end up. This exact lure and set up has been used by forum member Chris Steel in Jersey, Chris has been catching Bass all summer on this set up, saying it looks so much like a White Ragworm when swimming no wonder fish are loving it. The darker colour Curl Tail Shaker will no doubt be fantastic if you are in front of a King Ragworm bloom.

When looked at head on you can see what Chris means by the way this lure looks like a White Rag.

I imagine for Bass, Pollack, Wrasse and every other salt water species these have got to work, everything loves Ragworm!

With the Standard Zipper Worms, that made the Zipper Worm Company famous, the rigging techniques are very much the same. Again you can rig these weightless, weedless, Carolina, Texas or like these here on a jighead for tapping the bottom. Again like the Curl Tail find the in and out points.

This one is rigged flat side up/down. This will allow the lure to look like a swimming worm, the rippling ribs will come to life with the slowest of movements.

Keep the hook point close to the top flat side and nip it into the worm to make the lure Weedless.

To rig the worm side on with the ribs top and bottom it is exactly the same technique but you can use the ribs to your advantage to nipping the point of the hook into.

Like I say, the same method but just look how neatly the hook point sits hidden in the lure.

I personally prefer this side on rigging when using the lure weedless for fishing on or close to the bottom. If you are using the lure lighter, or almost weightless then I would rig it flat side up/down to give a more natural swimming action.

They look so good, in the water they just come to life too, we have been so impressed with these lures in the sea and would love to hear if any of the UK guys have used them in the freshwater for Pike, Zander or Perch.

One of the days I was out with Callum we did take a couple of pictures of the fish on Zippers, these were on the boat but Steve and Callum have been using these to great success from the shore, slowly twitching through bubble weed in shallow water. I remember one evening Steve having 3 Bass whilst we all blanked on soft paddle tails.
