I went out last night later than planned, missing a loosely arranged meet, sorry chaps, and fished for an hour with not a sniff. to make up for it I set my alarm last night and was out again a bit before 6 this morning. It felt fishy to me, and the birds as well were out a few stalled half way through dives at my lure. Activity really picked up for about 15 minutes, with about 10 terns working hard in front of me and splashes of fish in easy casting range.
And I caught my first bass of the year, a 25cm schoolie and I'm off the mark. It came on a maria amnis in silver cobalt, a new lure too which looks great twitched on a slow / medium retrieve. No photo as I don't have a camera.

thanks chaps, this is my second year of lure only fishing and last year was poor due to weed and weather around here. I'm looking forward to a full summer and autumn.

Well done Mike. First of the year is always the hardest. I fished lastnight until almost dark on a different beach but apart from a few small fish appearing for 5 mins no other signs at all. Very quiet.

I managed to drown my phione this moring so will be in touch when it dries out.

Nice one Mike. That area (if it's where I'm thinking) seems to respond early season after a mild prolonged spell.

Great news - lovely to hear of so many people opening their account for 2010. They're apperaing in dribs and drabs over here but I still haven't connected with one. Won't be long for us all...

I think it's the change of condition (the much needed swell mostly) Tim. I have a feeling that fish may have been around for a couple of weeks now, but conditions have just been tough - really flat and clear. I think we'll see a lot more fish caught early this week.
