I'm looking for a guide/link regarding the size of bass on a yearly basis. Eg year 1 approx 2 inches, year 2 and so on.

Im also interested to know has anyone ever gutted another fish to find a small bass in its stomach.
    Pollock, Mackerel, other Bass etc..

just google something like "sea bass life cycle" or dicentrarchus labrax life cycle.....................will give you plenty to go at,

even from quite a small size i think they are not at the top of other predatory fishes shopping list................bit like chewing razor blades and sewing needles !!...........

whats your interest ...............marine biology student or something ?

Ha....no im 42 buddy....long past Student age. Its the Peter Pan good looks that must have thrown you off. :)
Funny you say it though I wanted to be a marine biologist but missed by a handful of points in my exams. There are a number of small bass showing up along the east coast of Ireland all around the 6 Inch to 10 inch type size. I was wondering approx what age they are and if its an indication of a good year class. It then got me thinking on a side line around mortality rates among Bass fry. I have never heard anyone ever say they found a small bass inside another fish. I have since asked a few other ppl the same question and nobody seems to have. Your point on the razor blades probably being one of the best reasons as id say they look an appetizing mouthful when small.

The chart in this article suggests a two to three year old wild bass is approx 21 to 31cm. (6 - 10inches) wonder if they keep growing at that rate? Marine biologist Student Stuart Pudwell should know? STUART!!!! have you been paying attention in class this year

    Hi Eoghan

Derek Goodwin who sample nets bass in a few Cornish creeks in August and September every year since 1981 says the typical length of an 'O' group bass is 20mm and from then their growth rates are very temperature dependant.

In their tome Sea Bass Biology, exploitation and conservation the late Graham Pickett and his long-time Cefas colleague Mike Pawson document that at the end of their second year in nursery estuaries the bass young are 12 - 16cm in total length

Their growth in UK waters is slow compared to that of other commercial marine species. Bass attain a length of 25cms by the end of their third year and 33cm by the end of their fourth.

I've heard it said (cant remember where) that a 4lb fish is 10 years old and a 10lb fish is 20 years old. I have no idea if that's anything like accurate.

Tnks Steve that's great stuff. I knew it was sea temp dependent too and ours are slower growing than in the med for example. So the Bass showing up at the moment are likely 3-4 year old fish which means that 2013/14 may have been a good year class. It could also just be a local thing with the fry in that area having done well. I guess we will see over the next few years. When ye see them this size and think they have been around for 4 years already its a bit mind boggling.

This is from the BASS website:

Bass are slow-growing and long-lived fish.
The graph gives an indication of the likely range of length and weight at each year in a bass’s life.

A fish from UK waters weighing 10 pounds – about 28 inches (71 cm) in length – would probably be 20 years old, though it could be between 13 and 30.

Fish grow faster in warmer waters, but their life span may be shorter, so they do not necessarily achieve greater size.
A 10 pound fish from the Biscay Bay area might only be about 15 years old.

Most fish weighing more than about 5 pounds are female.

The age of a bass can be determined by reading the rings on its scales, in a similar way to aging a tree.
The graph represents scale readings from many bass over many years, by Donovan Kelley MBE in the early days, and more recently by the BASS fish recorders, Malcolm Brindle and John Leballeur.

So the median age of a 5lb fish is approx. 10 years

Because scale readings only show growth years, fish could be a lot older seem to be. Could a five pounder be a 20-30 year old male that doesn't grow as big as a female?
The most famous documented example of this phenomena is the 1952/3? record carp.
She weighed 44lb. scales were read at 15 years old, which tallied with known stocking of the lake in march 1934 with 1/2 year old fish. (the fish could have been 19/20 years old, but not registered growth in all those years, or a 15 year old fish from a 1937 spawning)
She spent a further 19 years in London Zoo aquarium, but at death her scales still read as being a 15 year old fish, because she didn't grow in the zoo.
So a fish known to be between 34 and 39 years old appeared to be 15.............
Fish in the wild also don't grow all their lives.
A 12lb 8oz Barbel I caught in 1986, became a known fish, and others were still catching her right up to the mid 2000s, always weighing roughly the same throughout those nearly 20 years. Would a scale reading have registered any of those 20 years? Probably not.

    Ah - Clarissa ;)

The indications are that males bass don't live as long as female bass, not into their 20's, although in this day and age that would be some achievement for a female.

With European bass the growth rings denote the periods during summer when they feed and grow according to water temps and in the winter when they migrate to deeper, more stable water temps, but feed much less frequently if at all and do not grow as they are using their energy reserves to produce eggs and milt, in preparation to then breed. So roughly they have an 8 - 10 month growth period and a 2 - 4 month 'dormant' period, all depending on the prevailing water temps.

With bass from Biscay and the Med the water temps do not fluctuate nearly as much as the Northern Atlantic / North Sea so the scales tend not to show such marked growth rings.
For commercially reared bass from Turkey, Greece and North Africa the scales contain very little growth rate information because they grow quickly and continuously without the stop /start growth patterns of wild Northern (sea) bass.

I would imagine that once a fish reaches optimum size as it's body length tops out it's scales would not need to grow so the annuli cease to form.

For me I find the whole thing fascinating. I know im obsessed with the species but in a good way. Caught my first one when I was 11 and it was approx 2.5 Ib. Never forget it. Since then its all I really wanted to catch. My biggest lure caught bass is the one in my profile pic, 76cm, caught just last year. Learning every year a bit more and research like this just adds to your knowledge and understanding of the species. Cant imagine how old the aul Girl was but can you imagine all the crabs, sandeels, pollock, wrasse etc she would have eaten in those years to get to that size. Would love a list of all the items. :)

Fascinating when you consider the "gauntlet" these older fish have had to run to attain their years. All the more reason for us to do our best to take care of them!

I think I have kept 7 or maybe 8 bass in my time. All of which were deep hooked and releasing them would have been cruel. This big girl along with 70 and 74 caught that morning went back. I honestly think anglers get excited when they land a big fish and I bet if you asked them after the fish was dead 30 mins later if they regretted it a high percentage would sadly say yes.

Really is Barry. I can only think that a spawning from a few years ago and favorable tides dumped a bunch of eggs here and the fry did well in the local estuaries.
