I have just finished my university finals and am in search of a career. Unfortunatley this is the worst time for a graduate to be looking for a career in a very long time. So if anyone could help I would be very grateful and as a gesture of my appreciation I will donate some of my first pay check to the forum.

Many thanks,

Ben

Same question, Ben - give us a half a chance ;). I work in recruitment so may be able to offer advice. Also, what do you want to do as well as what are you qualified to do? PM me an email address so I can look at your CV and give you some advice. We do some graduate stuff so may have some openings...

Now that's a top offer

Cheers guys for the quick replies. My degree is in Geography and I am expected a 2:1. What i am looking for is a career, something I can get stuck into. Perhaps in the tourism industry as my other passion, apart from fishing is travel. However, just getting my foot in the door way of any company that accepts a general degree would be great. It seems that today you need to get some good experience first then apply for what you actually want to do.

Tim, thanks for that great offer a pm is on its way.

Pilots don't actually get paid mega $$$$$$ - have three friends who have trained and operating now for different airlines - in fact one flies for BMI out of Jersey ...

IT in London is going ballistic at the moment - best job market since before Y2K which is really good - but you still need to get a foot on the ladder ... Financial Services in Singa and HK are also looking good too ...

not much help but follow your heart and pick carefully - I have had one major career change when I was alot younger and glad I did ...

Why not look at the environment ageny, I know they sometimes have graduate programs?

Interesting field to be in, a lot of variety and the chance to work outdoors sometimes too. With a Geography degree you stand in good stead.

Much better than IT to be honest, unless you like constantly reading very boring microsoft books and taking exams that will be out of date in a few months anyway. I've been doing it a while and to be honest I'm sick to the back teeth with it. I'd rather be stacking shelves in tesco's sometimes and if you don't like dealing with customers, imagine what it's like dealing with "colleagues" that don't know how to create a new spreadsheet in excel while you're trying to write complex SQL queries....seriously you wouldn't believe how many people that are in charge of a companies finances can't figure out the simplist of things on their desktops. :|

There will be a job at my company from tomorrow morning ;) I'll be going to a new one in 3 months time. Tons of Trust work in the islands but residency is the problem. Unfortunately, it can take 20 minutes to get to some fishing spots which is a bit of a grate and lunctime sessions are restricted to half hour wearing a business suit... You also have to get up by 8.30 to get to work for 9... it's a mare!! :p

Cheers Chad,

Had a look at the environmental agency - lots of environmental modelling etc... not quite what I am interested in - involves equations and computers rather than hanging out by rivers.

Andy - would love to live on an Island or at least on the coast.

Emigrate mate!!! Get out while you can!!! This country is seriously fooked up (has been for a while but is getting worse)
Thought about it mate. Went down to Aus to check it out. Loved it, the only problem was that there was to many Australians. Have also checked out South Africa as I have family there but everyone their lives in fear due to the security issues.

Keep checking Ben, once a year they roll out a graduate program that covers all aspects of their work, pay for the first year is crap but at the end you can choose what area you want to specialise in and there are very good prospects for a real job at the end. Hanging out by rivers plays a big part in some of the roles ;) If I could turn back time it's definitely something I'd be applying for.

Can't argue with that...

Considered New Zealand? not been personally but everyone I know who's been there (brother included) say it's like Aus but 50 years in the past, not as commercialised and more chilled out. Fantastic river trout fishing too, some of the best in the world. Sounds like heaven to me. Just wish I could convince the wife...

Every South African (about 6 of them) I know has had a close friend or relative shot dead, one while they were in the same car, and that's why they've moved over here. That's put me off ever going there slightly...
