We get cod 7 or 8 miles up the Tyne. I've had a 3 pounder a few hundred yards from the Tyne bridge. There was a 25 pound cod caught 5 miles up river last winter.

Personally I don't like fishing up river though. Doesn't feel like proper fishing on a footpath with railings or sat in your car watching your rod tip. Much prefer standing out on the rocks in the middle of nowhere.

Yeah, I was thinking you should be able to get one on an x-layer, but I haven't given it a go yet. A lot of the recent cod have been stuffed full of small fish.
