I was looking for fish under a great looking snag I'd seen before on a canal, the first time a boat moved I took the chance to fish it.

First cast I got nailed on the drop, second cast I hit into this on the drop again.

There were introduced illegally into the river Shannon system. They first showed up in a tributary (the River Inny) a few years back. The authorities did at one stage claim they had eradicated them but I would be very surprised if they aren't well established within another decade or three...

No closed season on canals or fisheries lakes.

The only canals that close are those with rare pondweed or other scientific interests.

Ref. no closed season on canals. Some canals that are part river or have a river flowing into them, do have a closed season. It's always worth checking first rather than getting nicked later!
