I had a few requests for a step by step for the flatwing pattern I sell
Hook: Gamakatsu SC`15 3/0
Thread ; White UTC 140
Tail Support: White Bucktail and a feather from a metz cock cape
Tail : white Metz Grade 2 mico barb hackles
Throat , Cheeks and Top wing : White Bucktail
Flash for tail : Mirage flashabou
Flash for body: saltwater UV flash
Eyes: Jungle cock
Step 1 : hook in vice
Step 2 : Form a thread base
Step 3 : place a clump of white bucktail on top of the hook shank and secure with 3 loose turns
Step 4 : Using your thumb and forefinger spread the bucktail evenly around the hook . then secure it with some tight wraps causing the bucktail to flare . add a drop of varnish or superglue
Step 5 : on top of the bucktail tie in a stiff feather from a cock cape , there is a natural curvature to these feathers , tie it in so it curves up
Thats the tail support done
Now for the tail
Step 6 : Tie in the first tail hackle ... If you have difficulty getting it to sit straight on top of the Bucktail and support hackle . try adding a dubbing pillow for it to rest on
Step 7: Tie in the 2nd tail feather a few inches longer than the first , tie in some flash at this stage too , then add the final tail feather again a few inches longer then the first ,add a drop of varnish or superglue
Step 8 : Using thread try and even out where the tail joins the hook and wrap with UV flash .. I use bug bond for durability but varnish or superglue will suffice
Tail complete
Step 9 : Invert the hook in the vice ..or turn it if you are using a rotary vice and tie in a sparse throat of Bucktail
Step 10: tie in sparse bucktail cheeks on both sides of the hook
Step 11: Tie in a sparse top wing of Bucktail
Step 12 : tie in some peacock herl on top of the top wing .add a drop of varnish or superglue
Step 13: Tidy up the head of the fly then add eyes of your choice , I'm using jungle cock here . Varnish head
Congratulations .. you've just tied a flatwing .
Try different colour combinations .. white and chartreuse , yellow and gray, lavender and grey ..all black etc
