Yes, I did it. I know it's not big of me but I couldn't help it. They were everywhere...
I had popped out with the Rocksweeper and a few lures in my pockets with the full intention of lure fishing for bass, but as I approached the beach I could see shapes in the clear water, each time a wave rose up they were there, thousands of them, just riding through the waves in the crystal clear water, you could see them on the surface and when the waves crested there were dozens and dozens just hanging in the wave.
i thought at first there might be a few bass in amongst them so I plugged away but all I felt was the constant bumping as "they" got in the way, I was retrieving slowly so as not to foul hook one of them but frustration got the better of me and I returned to the van (aka tackle shop with wheels...).
I got out the 13ft Avon and screwed on the Shimano Super 2500GT RA loaded with 8lb mono. (Obviously fully intending to distance cast for bass instead of using 8 strand and a lure rod...).
Instead I found myself riggin up an Avon with a single SSG shot and taping a starlight to the float as the light was fading. short leader and size 8 wide gape...
I found a loaf of bread in the back of the van (tackle shop on wheels remember... lol).
I then found myself putting some bread on the hook and casting into the swirling mass.
Cast after cast I was hit like a train but could I hook one of "them"??? Like **** I could. The wind was a mare, straight in F4/5 making it hard to keep the line in position and stop the waves pulling the float under.
After about an hour I made the shout to my mate who I called earlier to watch these mystery fish surfing, FISH ON!!
He's back across the beach with net in hand at a speed I didn't know possible...
I managed to get it up on a wave and into the net. Fight over.
Pic later... Ha Ha!!
So what was the result of that?
Well at about 2lb it was hardly big but blimey, that was boring on a big floppy rod, the drag didn't even move once, though it was quite tight. A long soft unweildy rod makes the fight just the rod bouncing up and down. Been a long while since I caught on that rod and I want to go after the little blighters with the LRF rod now even if it does have a float on it...
And here endeth my confession. I used bait... I'm sorry but i'm weak!!
