Try to get the hook coming out of the lure 1/4 to 1/3rd of the way back from the jighead etc.
I find that works the best.
Gape is also very important and I get around this problem weedless by using straight shanked hooks now.
a 3/0 or 4/0 is about right for most 4 or 5" lures.
I'm not adverse to re-bending either and often manipulate hook bends and shanks to match a particular lure. Just be careful because not all hooks are bending friendly. Wear glasses when attempting it in case of shattered metal. If they DO snap out easily, change brand.
