My main purchases for the forthcoming season are pretty much complete now. This morning, i had a 'Jersey moment' . . when a box was plopped on my desk from the channel island !!! :jump: :jump: In the box, was my new toy . . . . . . . a Shimano Rarenium C14 4000 FA. After much deliberation, and considering all kinds of options, at all kinds of prices, i've decided to go for this little beauty. Very very light (lighter than my Technium !!), and very very smooth . . . . can't wait to get out there & hear the drag clicking !!!!!

:wackit: Isn't that the same as the Excense or is it just the metal thats the same?

I don't know much about the Excense to be honest (isnt that the reel that Mick bought after Vidar posted a link ??). But there are a few Shimano models available in the C14 now, which from my understanding is just a material substitution to reduce weight ?? I'm sure that someone else will know more, or correct me if i'm wrong about that ?
Annoyingly it is very much like the Excense but its about half the price and comes with two spools!! I am amazed the Rarenium doesnt get more talk, its a beauty for the price.
Mick, whats the price for a 4000 and a 2500? Can you give me the drag and line retrieve for both too please, shimano's online spec is usless.
Cracking looking reel !!!
I love shimano, although if a win the lottery i'd try a diawa branzino :wackit: .
Until then what does that retail for?
Beat me too it Andy
The title implies the plural of 'weapon'.....what else you got to wreck for the new season Si........any red rods in the bundle or have you not followed the herd and chosen something more sublime? :muttley:
Thats a lully little reel Si', i've been considering one of the CI4 reels myself, namely the stradic,, not quite a fireblood but still lush,,,

Yep. seen them Marc. Lovely. Only seen them in the smaller sizes though, and couldnt find any sources in this country. I've got high hopes for the Rarenium . . . cant believe how light it is, which is exactly what i wanted !!! :wackit: :wackit:
Yeah its a shame they dont do the stradic in a 4000 size, but i think a 2500 would be ideal to use with 7ft rods.. :D
That Rarenium looks very very nice.

I wish they made those foam handle knobs as after maket additions for the Twinpower.
Just spooled her up with some fresh 15lb Powershot. Lovely. Bolted her onto the rod too . . . . . what a stunning light set-up !!!

I did massively underfill the spool though - perhaps i should've put a little more backing on ?? Is underfilling by about 3 or 4mm ok ??

Why underfill at all Si? Surely with 'decent' reels you can fill to the brim.......both my stradics and the VS are full, no wind knots either, different story with my old cardinal though and a couple of cheapies from tacklesmart (but mostly to do with the braid maybe?).
I didnt deliberately underfil her. I just didnt want to put too much backing on, as i wanted to get the full spool of braid on there (150m). So i've probably got about 170m on there, which is more than enough. I could have put more backing on - but is there any point ?
Just try it Si, and getting line trouble does seem to occur with me more when I am using soft plastics, maybe thats just my crap technique though.
ive stopped underfilling, ive beaten wind knots by manualy folding over the bail after each cast and got into the habit of tugging the braid so its sits tight.
si how do you find the power shot?im lookin for a good 15 lb low diam braid to go on my soron.

I absolutely love it. I've got 3 spools of it (tried both blue & orange/yellow). I find it behaves really well, and feels superb to use. There's a thread on here somewhere with braid reviews on it, and i'm sure that Mick said that he found it a 'little' unruly . . . but i certainly havent.
