A friend of mine was in St Malo over Christmas and bought me a copy of Loup et Bar Dec 2009/Jan 2010 and Peche en Mer Dec 2009 (good bloke). I thought you might be interested in some of the contents.
The Loup et Bar magazine has a 6 page review of 40 new lures. Alleluhah. Floating, suspending (steady the 2Ks) and sinking. Actually they are not all "new", some are smaller versions of existing plugs, relaunches of old designs etc, onto the French market. But some nice looking stuff, hope they do soft plastics in the next edition! Also the new Sakura Mazzera rods, 7 models between 6.8ft and 8ft with the shorter rods having longer tips like the Tenryu Injection. VSS-KN real seat (think Morethan Branzino) and Gunsmoke SIC rings. Yum.
And articles on: finesse fishing with SPs; drop shotting for difficult fish;lures made from real fish skin; choosing between hard and soft lures; responsible fishing; and so on. I love it.
I'm still hoping to do some more rockfishing, so an article on metal vibration lures in Peche en Mer more than justified its price. It also had articles on; John Dory on lures and bait; vertical SP fishing for maigre (24kg); the differences between jigging and vertical fishing; interview with a La Rochelle charter skipper; loads of good stuff.
Anyway even if you are not a francophile these French mags are worth their weight in gold. You can learn more from one page than a years worth of certain other angling magazines. I know Mick keeps them on the counter for his customers to browse over their coffee. If I see anything that warrants sharing I'll happily translate the gist of it on here, respecting copyright and all that of course.
PS. I laughed when I saw the name of a new rockfishing lure featured in Loup et Bar called the Bottom's Eye, which I am sure must mean something else to the French and Japanese! I'll check with my proctologist. Oh the irony.....
