Lighter and lighter Bait finesse :)

3226 Views 17 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Andrew Letto
I have been playing with bait finesse rods on and off for months broken 1 already sadly. But finished a knock up on a 3wt brook fly rod blank made it cheap with salvaged parts from other rods. But test casts using the calcutta 100 dc and it is chucking a 1.8 gram jika with a 2.5 inch crawbait 30 yards on each cast.
As many know i favor baitcast rods for wrasse anyways but always found that the 7-28 was over powered a little, like the 7-21 rods but again tip sensitivity on smaller weights was a personal issue. Took out the palms mola yesterday and boom god i love this rod a really sensative tip, but loads of power down lower rated at 3-10 grams i will throw a lot higher than that. Pollock playing ball to around 2lb and no issues. hooked into a very nice wraase but braid parted company my own fault using a short leader. With fishing time really cut down at the moment finesse suits my needs like a glove at the moment. handles small lures and big fish what else could you want? Next target mullet dropshot bait finesse styles should be interesting.
Anyone else tried bait finesse yet?

Well done on finding a style that suits your needs Mike. I personally can't see any advantage with baitcasters while fishing UL over a fixed spool set up, other than the joy of using some " bling" tackle,But there again I've not really played with one for any length of time. What would you say the main advantage is ???
Interesting sounding rod Mike. It's a dream of mine to find a super sensitive rod at 2g, but have genuine power down low to get a head up.
3 things have really spring to mind mate accuracy, i consider myself accurate enough for my needs with both spin and baitcast could be a lot better but hey that's learning. Then when fishing down the side of walls, fences and alike which i do a lot of usually where i shouldnt be in the first place keeping out of site not advised. casts pitched, flipped pre loaded overhead with little to no swing required.
But the killer is especially with the lighter lures OTD "on the drop" takes you think you feel them on a spinning rod? Now feel the line running through under your thumb you feel so much more.
But the single most important thing to me? i enjoy it and have enourmous fun fishing in this way getting a sense of accomplishment when you make a perfectly presented cast when it could so so easily go all tits up. :) Besides which i have caught a lot of fish on it big and small :)

all being well out again tonight working through differing lures depends if i can escape kiddie duty though lol... Mark the bait finesse rods are sensative but very powerfull. designed to bust big fish from structure using heavy fluro lines or braid for that matter on certain reels.

Lol nope tge super destroyer would go before these mate. Just love casting then even practice casting is fun. Might try abd get done on video too when I have a decent chance ;)
I have a couple of BC reels ,A shimano designed for pure vertical Bay Game and the much respected Daiwa Ryoga, My BC rods are designed for vertical work so as yet I have not really used a BC reel in the salt for casting .I had a BC outfit I fished for Pike in Cornwall years ago. I took it sea fishing once and now its in landfill !

I can appreciate that its a fun way to fish and dare I say you get more finnese or feel at times .What I am confused or concerned about is just how much a BC would reduce the distance of my cast ? Wrasse will eat a lure fished vertical or near vertical under my boat. Big Bass tend to spot the boat and turn away if they get too close (Not always Obviously )

If I am fishing a standard xlayer and 7 g jig head . What percentage of distance will I lose in comparison with a fixed spool ??
Been doing this in FW since before it was commonly called 'bait finesse' :) basically just fishing ultralight lures with a baitcasting setup.

Fairly recently I got that Japanese Abu Revo LT which is rated for use in salt, so I'd quite like to try it sometime if I'm ever near the right kind of coast!

Oz I have not lost that much tbh but feel is improved with a matched rod. Personal preference I'm enjoying using bc set ups a whole lot more. Being able to feel the lure down really helps. But each to there own I guess

Im not anti BC Im asking about casting distances and lure weights for your current outfits , I am BC curious and considering swinging my rubber both ways ! So to speak

EG If I fished a 7 g lure on a regular outfit and cast 100 feet, how many feet would a BC cast ?

Dependant on many factors mate rod rating action, casting rate, reel, line casting ability, braking set up DC, SVS, mag etc. i went through 6 reels to find one that suited me. Say 7'7 hpr versus the megabass both stiff rods casting lower rating i could cast the 30 yards with 7 grams and 3 inch senko with both. if casting a 1.2pe braid. Change to a fluro line or a different reel things might be different again.
I can pitch a 2.5 gram mepps 30 yards with a finesse rod on the same reel but i made a few changes inserts bearings, oils etc. i like tinkering lol. Went through many rods to find what suited me, though it does require a rod and reel set up for a task to get the best from them mate they are not all rounders so to speak. i will be down your way in a couple of months will bring down my kit and you can try it see what you think mate

Oz, I have been fishing BC for long enough to know that if distance is important, then use a fixed spool. It just makes life easier. Baitcasters are more about accuracy and control than distance. For example, I have both BC and spinning versions of the standard Injection (SP73M and BC68M). If it is very windy or distance is important then the spinning version comes out to play otherwise the BC version gets the nod. Both work well.
One thing that does make a difference is the line. Braid on a fixed spool has meant huge leaps in distance for casting lures but personally, I don't think it makes as much difference on a BC reel as other factors influence it as well. Spool weight and the corresponding inertia, bearing quality, braking systems etc all contribute in ways that you don't even need to consider with a fixed spool. Add to that the BC rods are generally shorter too.
I wouldn't be without my BC outfits but thay don't do everything. Knowing what works best and when means you get the best of both.

Yup, sums it up quite perfectly
Can someone recommend some finesse bait casting reels and their reasons ? I'm looking for a reel to match a Sakura Furiozza FRC 651 ML.

Cheers

Fresh, salt or both?

Probably both, I would like to target perch with it and occasionally use it in the sea for specific situations. I have other set-ups for sea finesse use so it wouldn't be used all the time.

Cheers

Andrew, I use a Daiwa PX68R for mine but it isn't recommended for the salt. Start another thread and you will likely get more replies.

Thanks for that Mike, I was thinking about a Pixy. I'll start a new thread and see who has what to say and why,

Cheers
