I just think it would be nice to compile a list of what species we have caught on lures and flies in the sea around the British Isles. If you have a species to add could you copy and paste the list adding the species you want to it. If you want to add a story of the capture and maybe a picture it might be handy too.

Bass
Pollack
Mackerel
Horse Mackerel (Scad)
Garfish
Ballan Wrasse
Sea Trout
Black Bream
Trigger Fish
Pouting
Cod
Thin Lipped Mullet
Flounder

In addition to some of the others already mentioned in over thirty years of lure fishing in the sea I have caught ONE shad! On a metal lure when fishing for mackerel, no idea whether it was a twaite or allis.

Ok, here goes mine, I don't know the correct english name of some fish so in that case I'll post along the scientific name:

- European Seabass (topwater lures, SP's, plugs, metal jigs)
- "European Croaker"/Meagre/ argyrosomus regius (topwater lures, metal jigs, SP's)
- Mackerel (metal jigs, SP's)
- Chub Mackerel (metal jigs)
- Garfish (metal jigs, topwater lures, plugs, SP's)
- Ballan Wrasse (SP's)
- White Sea Bream (SP's) (foulhooked)
- Octopus (SP's)
- Twaite Shad (Allosa Fallax) (metal jigs, SP's)
- Spotted Seabass (Dicentrarchus Punctatus) (metal jigs, SP's, plugs)
- Viúva (a kind of bream that we have here, couldn't find it's sci. name) (plugs)
- Lusitanian Toadfish (God, I hate this fish) (SP's, plugs, metal jigs)
- Cuttlefish (EGI lures, SP's)
- Mullet (Plugs)
- Sole Fish (Plugs)
- Atlantic Horse Mackerel (metal jig's)

Bonus:

2 x Seagull (Topwater lures).

And that's all :)

I reckon a Giant Goby is on the cards on the lures. The marina is teeming with the little buggers. Might have a try when i'm mulletting when it warms up.

Me and Mark were just talking Giant Goby today.

http://www.glaucus.org.uk/gobies1.htm

Read about half way down. Leopard spotted one looks awesome.

LRF will really start to show we have lots of 'real' rockfish just like the Japanese. Just ours are tougher. LOL
I reckon you are going to have to go rock pool skishing for those Keith.

I can put you on to some smaller ones up to a few inches, you could also try for prawns in the same pool.

And/or a deep rock gutter nearby with a large boulder that holds wrasse (biggest I saw taken by the old bean that showed me the hole 5.25lb) - and where you can hear their pharyngeal teeth crunching in anticipation when you drop green crabs in.

But you wouldn't like that would you?

I just thought it was really interesting, the amount of fish we walk by every day yet, are so revered in countries like Japan.

It's changing though.

I was being serious Keith!

I have seen lots of congers between 10 and 30lbs in lobster holes in 1ft of water that people have been walking past. And countless decent wrasse. Some of the holes are well known for it.

Maybe I should take a lure rod with me when I go LW fishing and if I see one try to get it to take a lure?

Not so sure about the "revered" thing though, the Japanese seem to be quick on the draw with the chopsticks and the wasabe.

Flounder

If anybody on this forum would like to have a crack at the flounder, I live in flounder city! Where I live it is paved with them from September to December so would probably be the best place to stand a very good chance on the lure. I think Henry will agree with me here about this.
mmmm.... I can feel a meet coming on later in the year.

I had over 60 in a 2-3 hour period this year on bait (2 of us:1 rod each) and the best session was 140 odd between 3 of us in a league match a couple of years ago on bait in 5 hours!
So as good a place as any?
