I wondered that as well. If 'guests' can only view the couple of articles on the front page, how can they be showing as browsing the threads also?

nope, thats afair googles or other search engines crawlers that are capable of visiting boards cause that is anchored somewhere in the phpBB board software.
There must be a switch to keep em out, but that is a question for the admins!
