tonight i tryed one of my best rough ground marks with all sorts of
lures sls17 chase sw feed shallow patchinko one up shads and
x layers...but failed to nail a silver bullet even though they were
present...i could see bass swimming in the gulleys from a height and
they were patrolling gulleys litterly a few feet from shore..i did get
a bow wave and a few swirls behind the patchinko but they just
would not nail it...which is often the case ...very frustrating just
like watching several bass follow to your feet and turn away at
the last second every time...someone in another thread spoke
about bass showing interest in crab only..i will fish this ground
thurs nite with crab...to see if this is the case..i think it is...
i will let ye know how that goes...micheal quirke

Michael,
Do you think they are more interested looking for peelers than going for a lure??

more interest in peelers

Michael,
Do you think they are more interested looking for peelers than going for a lure??

hi rich
i definately do...the peelers hav really started to explode in the past 2 wks
and i think the bass have focused on little else..maybe when more baitfish
like sandeel and sprat show they will change...similarly in sept when the
sandeels hit the dry sandbanks on the springs they look at nothing else..
but they will take lures in sept...i think its just a massive gorge on them
crab on the inital moult...i might be wrong..il keep trying anyway.
good luck

I dunno. I've caught Bass before that i've kept for the table, that i've caught on lures, and have been stuffed with crabs. I think that many of us will have experienced sessions where we get follow after follow, but no hook-ups. I just think that it's 'one of those things' sometimes.

Hi Michael,
I think fishing bait in the same ground as you are seeing the bass not attacking your lures is the way to go. If the fish are definately there its a very good experiment and one that you should learn loads from. If you can fish bait and get a mate to cast lures at the same time, that would be the ideal test.
Best of luck.

silver bullets

hi simon,
yep thats the thing with the silver bullets,i guess its just
not knowing what way they will behave and trying to figure this
out that makes them so addictive...and i love it....

Hi Trev,
I get your drift, if the experiment works and bass are taking bait but not lures, you could always swap rods/ tactics 1/2 way through to discount any luck/ angling ability factors!
Seriously I have learned of several instances where this experiment has worked; the fish have been there, even later on in the season when they should be up for hitting lures, where they have been refusing everything, but when the switch to bait is made, bass have been caught imediately. Not just in dodgy conditions either, in ideal lure fishing conditions.
Most amazing example I heard of was 3 guys chucking lures for days in Ireland in prime conditions and locations where they had caught lots of and big bass on previous trips, with just one small bass between them for days of effort.
One guy switched to bait and pulled 2 doubles out in consecutive casts. The following day he returned and made exactly the same switch and had a couple of 6lb'ers. Totally bizare isnt it....
