how did you all get to where you are now ? thought it would be interesting to hear what are your memories of the first fish you caught ,where and what it was , and how old you were?
Myself ..........it was 43 years ago when i was 8 and me and my best mate cycled down to Gothersley canal in the west midlands and caught a couple of gudgeon on worm, after that it was a daily competition to see who caught the most and then new species also came into the contest. Then 2 years later i (and family) moved back to my fathers birthplace here on the north wales coast and the SEA !!! the rest was inevitable .................

Trevor,

My first memory was in Tenby fishing with my Uncle and Father some 38 years ago when I was 10, we were fishing from some rocks with gear my Uncle had with him, 3 hand lines and one rod, my Dad caught first, then me, both had Mackerel ! Hooked  :D for many years after that but stopped when I was 16 (girls and stuff) started again when I was 25 and fly fished our local rivers for wild brown trout, after 10 years stopped that to play golf, then took the sport back up again last August when my good friends enthusiasm (Simon Lewis) had me hooked again

I was about 8 years old, fishing with my dad on his friends boat out of Guernsey, we were fishing at the back of Sark, and i caught a cuckoo wrasse, needless to say it was'nt that big, but i remember how stunning it was.
To finish the day off we managed to get within about 25 yards of a huge Basking shark those memories last a life time.

I was lucky to be on Achill Island in south west Ireland on holiday 28 years ago and saw 2 Baskin Sharks from the beach some 50 yards out, as you say memories like that live forever ;)

Started VERY early.

As for lure fishing, I fished for coarse predators long before I fished for Bass.

But, unlike many, my first Bass was in fact a double. Yep, that's right, my first ever Bass.
The mark i caught it on doesn't exist now but I have fond memories.

In my 29 years I've done a bit of everything. My first memories were from when I was about 4 though when I tagged along with my dad to places like Newquay headland and Flysellers. I don't remember dpoing much fishing myself until i was about 7. Back in those days it was possible for a 7 year old to cast a 7' boat rod from the rocks and still come back with 3 mackerel each cast. I remember being totally knackered - and we'd probably only fished for half an hour.

My dad and I stopped going quite so much by the time I was about 11, at which point I started taking myself off coarse fishing instead. Did that until a few years ago with only the odd sea fishing sesh to keep me in it (bait fishing for only the odd whiting or doggie).

2 years ago I moved to a place only a short walk from a number of beaches and reefs - so that was it! Plugging allowed me to just pick up a rod and go... I didn't fish all that much for the first 6 months or so, but after that.... Here I am. My dad has the occasional days plugging now as well, although we rarely fish together. Think that'll change this yaer though.

I know, it hurts many people when i tell them that.

Go take a paracetamol...

It's just a shame that it happened because, for many years, everything was an anti climax.
Perhaps that is why I started to pursue fish in methods I found to be more difficult. To bring
back the challenge so to speak.

My first fishing memory was when i was 9 taking part in a junior comp at our local breakwater (I only caught a spider crab) and a large sunfish swum the length without being hooked by a number of over excited youths. When I was 18, me and my wife to be, bought ourselves rods and went fishing with a workmate. Me and my mate blanked, but the wife caught a 4 1/2lb bass
I did have another golden day with a friend when we caught 50 schoolies between us over a whole tide. My personal best on bait is 10lb 8oz, and then I never caught another for about 22 yrs. I had about 5 last year on plugs, and now armed with knowlege, cannot wait for the water to warm up a little :jump:

My first bass on a lure was over 20 years ago. I will never forget that fish, it was only a small fish around 2 to 3lb but that moment is still etched in my memory. I have landed many good bass in the 20 plus years that have gone by since, but that first bass is still the one for me.

Saw a Puffin last thursday, must have been good as I stopped fishing to watch it for a bit.
Saw what was left of one in an 80lb Halibut last year.Anyone know if theres a lure made that imatates a Puffin

Being taken Mullet fishing not long after i learnt to walk.Took me many years before i caught one by myself, but i used to love watching my uncle with a bamboo pole,a cleat with cord on it & just 6 inch of catgut to the hook. The ritual was to chervie(groundbait) all week so as the mullet were confident by the weekend. On arrival at the spot the chervie was trickled in, i was told to sit in a certain spot where i could look down & watch the mullet as they came in,but i was told if i moved an inch i would scare them & would never be taken again. My uncle would wait till there was a good few in before fishing. The line with a piece of lead flattened around the cord just above the catgut was gently lowered below the feeding mullet, then ever so gently pulled back between the fingers. As soon as the slightest pull or extra weight was felt the bamboo was lifted up & in one movement the mullet was swung onto the rocks. It really was a black art, marks, chervie recipes & styles were fiercly guarded secrets, many times we left home before light only to end up doin a big detour or hiding in a field cause he thought we were being followed. Can never thank him enough for giving me a lifetime of enjoyment of fishing & the enviroment.
