Small plugs

I have more small plugs than I dare count but (sensible) light tackle bassing seems to be a bit of an obsession for me. This is partly due to the average size of the fish I catch and the fact that a lot of those are caught on clean ground. So those of you that use and catch on small plugs of any sort, what do you use? By small I mean sub 10cm and 14gram or so.

I have so many sub 10cm plugs I can't count them.

8cm xrap and 10cm xrap my best over the last 5 years

megabass edonis, and now, the shorter Jackson Athlete's (I reckon hot for 2010)
Athlete Lee Bait 7cm (longer lipped diver).

Also, Jackson dead float 8cm (waker) and risk bait 7cm (walkbait).
Pin Tail tunes ....7cm, 20g (great fast retrieve lure, small bait, long distance, open water) and
the 6g 5.5cm. Also casts great for a tiny lure.

OSP Asura (Rudra's little sister), great lure.

We also use loads of lipless baits, have done for many years. 2 - 4" in length. Rapala, C/Cordell, Jackson (quiet
lippless (rare these days,99% rattle)), Bill Lewis L-Trap...etc

crankbaits (various), again 3" is standard fodder.

Dice Bankroll 80, sinking glide/subsurface walk/jerk bait
Dice Betz 81, sinking, deep digger, wide bib, big wobble for little
presence.

Loads, loads more, would bore you..

Small plugs hold a strange fascination for me for some reason. The smallest plugs I consistently use and catch on are Vision 110's, so not quite <10cm, but still pretty small. I am looking for a lighter rod now though, have got my eye on the ESG 3-23g, so its an area I will be exploring more in the coming year. Will watch this thread with interest.

Oh, the likkle X-Rap I use as well, not sure how big that is though.
yeah i think one of my top plugs is an xrap 10. lovely little plug!

Would the Injection be suitable for some of the small'uns ??
I have still never seen an Injection yet. I am beginning to think they are a mythical beast.....
By the sounds of Keith's exploits they sound about right though. I am sure he will let you know. The rods I use sound very similar in terms of power but some of the time I will go lighter still if conditions allow.

Being completely honest, yes it is fine.
It isn't built for small plugs and on very small 3cm plugs it IS overpowered.

But, the rod will cast even 1.5 gram a long way, it is quite a forgiving rod that
with correct settings would easily protect the lightest saltwater braids. I'm doing
PE 0.8 tests on the weekend.

I have cast a large range now of plugs from 3cm to 7cm on the Injection and
it is a very useable rod indeed. It is first, a soft plastics rod, lets be clear about it.

But, as i discovered, it is the best spinnerbait and buzzbait rod I've used in the salt.
The sensitivity of the rod means that it can be used in a multi purpose role.

However, when the plugs get bigger, you start to see that role diminish.
You could however, carry just the injection, with a selection of soft plastics
and plugs, right upto 145mm and fish with them. The larger range plugs would
be purely the non jerkbait styles though except for the occasional use.

I just wish they would build one a foot longer.

One of my local tackle shops has just got in a wide range of Cormoran small lures, and i was looking at them yesterday. They just looked so cute & sexy that i wanted to buy them. I didnt know what i'd do with them, and i certainly don't have a rod to flick them . . i just wanted them.

I think i'm turning into a Magpie . . . . . . . . or maybe Vidar is just rubbing off on us all !!!

btw . . thanks for the response Keith. Great info as always.

Keith, have you tried a Super Distance?
I would be interested to hear how they compare. A SD is very fast actioned and about a foot longer than an Injection.

I have plans to do exactly that.
