Has anyone used both the Shukan and Supermix 270? I have a Shukan 8.6 at the moment, and was thinking of upgrading, but I do a lot of top water work.

So the question I was hoping you guys could help with is:

I know it is a different class of rod overall, but is the Supermix as good/fast enough as the Shukan for top water fishing?

I have had my SM270 for over a year now - I use it as my go to rod even though I have an ultimate one in the cupboard!

I cannot comment on the Shukan as I haven't seen or used one but the SM will work topwaters with ease - it has a super fine fast tip that takes a bid of adjustment to your style but I now find it easier to work topwaters over the UO ...

I am selling the SM270 and going to a pair of rods - UO for hardbaits and an Injection for SP's ... I am intending on carrying both as I tend to have the spare on my back slung in my camelbak ...

Thanks Alex, food for thought, I see will if anyone one here has used both, but I am now very tempted. I do some pretty severe rock hopping/climbing down my end to get to a lot of spots so carry two is not really an option for me most of the time :-(

I have the Shukan. I also have a Supermix 240 - but i havent had a chance to use it yet. But, i bought the Supermix on the basis that it 'would' be different to the Shukan, and that it would not be 'as good' as the Shukan at top water. My understanding is that the direct upgrade to a Shukan would be a Rod Bar, rather than the SM.

I may be wrong, as i havent done the direct comparison yet - but hopefully, if my research proves to be correct, the Supermix will be a compromise rod, that can work s/p's as well as top water (whereas the Shukan is hopeless on s/p's).

So, i'd say that if you are after an out-and-out top water rod upgrade, the Supermix would not be the rod to go for.

However - Alex's rod is a hell of a good deal !!! So that may be worth the punt anyway !!!!

I think that's pretty much it.

The Supermix has a much softer tip than the Shukan - so is musch better with soft baits. I use an 8'6" Shukan most of the time, but have tried the Supermix 210 and I think a 270 while messing around. Being used to the Shukan, the supermix does feel very soft and you'll probably think it's not so good for topwater stuff. Other than that though, it'll do it all brilliantly.

Rod Bar may be a better option?

Thanks guys, I don't do much SP work, so as much as the price is very tempting, it might just sit in the cupboard gathering dust. Will stick with my Shukan until a bargain rod bar comes up!!!! Which could be some time.

thought about a bushwhacker? A friend of mine is very satisfied with his 8ft fishing SPs and its cheapo at the moment whilest there is already the 2010 version out.

Thanks Doc. I already have one, but its got a snapped tip section at the moment (trapped it in car seat, bloomin 3 door cars!!), waiting for a replacement. It will be my Kayak plugging rod this year
