It might seem a bit quaint to the seasoned travelling anglers on here but I've never taken my 'decent' rods on a flight with me.

I've been looking at hard cases but the prices seem a bit scary: anyone got any cunning money saving ideas on that front?

I suppose I need to book my rod + case on as an extra bag?

Any advice or tips gratefully received

bit of plastic drainpipe with the ends taped or capped is the cheap option

You don't say what size rod it is.
What about a rod tube that is cunningly disguised as a crutch.

it is, Tim. You get them PE Tubes with fitting caps in different diameters and length, shorten it to your needs and fill some foam into the caps. You can surround your rodbags with foam also to protect the rods and fix them in the Tube.
And yes, at most airlines you will have to book the Tube early (depending on the size you may be asked to pay an extra fee).

Cheers
