Ok guys,I was fondling my new toy (Branzino :spoo: ) yesterday afternoon contemplating how far tackle has come over the last few years especially and thinking how it will advence more etc.
I dont like the term "SPINNING" in fact I hate it totally.
There is something very 'noddyish' about that term and I think its an old fashioned term that demeans 'modern lure fishing'.
I sincerely believe that 'noddy' terms like "spinning" need to be removed from the modern lure fishing terminology and vocabulary.
I have had people come up to me when I have been working a surface lure and they have commented "thats a nice spinner aint it". :x
My reaction to this is "**ck *ff and leave me alone you noddy.
Sorry to be so blatent but to me it has to go.

So you'll not be using any Toby's, Flying C's, or Dexter Wedges this season then ????????

I like your style !!!

Off topic but . . . . i hate it when people come up to me and ask "what are you hoping to catch ??" . . it's always that tourist numpty with the excessively sized back-pack full of feck-all, and gaters, brand-new North Face jacket, wrap-around Stevie Wonder glasses, and a map . . . . . .my favorite answer is "Blue Fin Tuna, Barracuda, or a Bronze Whaler Shark" . . . . . . . well that is what i'm 'hoping' to catch !!!!

But Simon are those lures part of modern lure fishing :?:
I do use Toby lures but I dont spin with them,,,I work them :)
Spinning is an old fasioned term though isn't it and yes I think it should be removed from our vocabulary. :)

Nick, I agree with your main point - spinning just doesn't have any relevance these days for most of us. The question is, does the plugging community (here and elsewhere) have the commitment to spread the word about what can be achieved with modern lures these days? We have all seen the looks we get from many traditional bait fishermen when we go scrambling across the rocks with a light rod and lure bag only. The comments seem universal: "You're wasting your time spinning round here, mate"; "You want some decent worm for here, mate" etc etc. Do we just smile smugly and say thanks, or do we share the details of our catches and what kit we use?
The dilemma for many I suggest is this: We love lure fishing with all our light and shiny gear, but we are a protective, secretive bunch who really don't like to share our methods and marks with the general fishing population. We freely chat to anyone "in the know" or who finds these forums, but how do we reach a wider audience? When we do this then we will get more gear available in the UK as importers and distributors see the value of the UK market. Also, magazine and web coverage will increase and the possibility of sponsorship for events and individuals will increase.
That is the future I would like to see for modern lure fishing!

I associate spinning with rotating blade baits.

mepps, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits etc

But, all those digs are modern lure/plug fishing are best ignored.

Most of it is unwarranted and petty to say the least. That is the nicest way
I can phrase it anyway.

Most 'Spinning' rods are totally unsuitable for modern styles imho.

However, there still is a place for spinning. I do it myself.

I don't mind if it's called spinning, lure fishing, plugging or whatever else.

I just hope we do not come across as some of the "dry fly" only fly fishermen do. They look down on anyone who dare use a lure or wet fly.

I enjoy fishing whatever method I try.

Marc - could not agree more, it's just bass fishing in the end, whatever way you go about it - spinners, lures, bait, fly etc.

Make it nice and easy - call it "bass fishing".

I can understand any angler wanting to "protect" where they fish.

But "protecting" actual fishing information ? What on earth is the point ? The future of bass fishing lies in guys like us sharing information on how we go about catching bass - whether it be through some outstanding guys on a forum like this, via magazines, websites, plain old word of mouth, or simply shrugging off those daft comments we all get directed at us from time to time and just making the whole thing look as appealing as we all know it is.

Keith, nobody is saying there isn't a place for spinfishing.
I spinfish for troot up in Scotland and enjoy it lots but,to me its a different sort of fishing altogether.
I think what I am trying to say is that the 'modern lure fishing 'that we all do and discuss is with plugs/soft lures etc.
You may not agree with how I originally put it but can you see that there is a difference.

Nick:

I wasn't referring to you. LOL

I just meant there is place for everything. People are in general, reluctant to change.
Modern Bass lure fishing is bringing 'change'.

No one will ever agree, we've seen that on other forums.

I fish plugs as my main method, soft plastics and fly next.
You've seen the stick we get for discussing anything other than casting a plug as
far as possible and cranking it back as fast as possible.

However, alot of folks are really starting to try other methods.

Spinning is an established method. It does catch Bass.
However, I've yet to see many photo's of Big Bass caught on Mepps or other 'spinners'.
I must add though, that 'spinning' can be taken to great presentational heights.
We learned a ton about spinning chasing the Illusive Welsh Sea Trout.

Like I've said, I do spin, but...
It is way down on my list of choices to attack marks.

Like has been said and you probably misunderstood. The old school should
stop knocking us and we should accept that older methods still have a place.

Just cause something is new doesn't make it automatically right. The reverse argument
is also true.

I like the term Bass Lure fishing as it encompasses everything artificial.

I try to fish as far away as possible from people, but when they say to me what are you going to catch today I say fish, if they continue I state all the fish that come into my mind, I have also said Scuba divers, yes I really have caught one.

Nick, its happening mate, I too starting hating the term "spinning" a few years ago, and I work in a tackle shop! Imagine how often I hear it!? I have for ages now been corecting people when they ask for it, I mean I dont go all condesending on them but I explain the difference between a spinning rod and what I would class as a lure rod. I much prefer to hear the term "I am going plugging" or "I am going lure fishing" it kind of makes it sound more than just cranking a Yann for mackerel etc. So I agree, spinning is only to be used with the old and infirm.

What are we like!? It must be the winter!!!

Mick you have put it very well indeed. :)
There will always be a place for spinning but its not going to progress 'modern lure fishing'.
