Was not sure where to put this, so my apologies if it's in the wrong place............

I just got an email from an Australian magazine editor that I do some work for and I thought it might be of interest :

Had a great trip to Papua (New Guinea) – with black bass (regarded by many as the hardest fighting fish that lives and not to be confused with the pussy American black bass) to 30lbs. One in our group lost 30 lures on them
Any fish that takes 30 lures off a guy has got my interest...........

And I hear guys saying that our bass strip reel gears, break rods and trash lures.

Papua New Guinea might be a hell of a long way away, but someday, somehow, I am going to do that.

That just sounds awesome !!!! I really have to make more of an effort next year to get further afield with a fishing rod !! Plotting & scheming somewhere exotic for early next year (Seychelles, Mauritius, . . . . .too many potential places to list), as long as the misses realises that she won't see much of me when we get there, we'll get along just fine !!!

Indeed the hardest estuary/brackish water fish. Also known as new guine bass/lure cruncher.Reel gear breaker.A lutjanus family.Other than new guine....we have them on a few river in borneo.Never accounter them my self, but had saw a few fishing vid bout them and have a few friends that had locking horn with them. This guys are using jigging gear to troll for them and still lost to the fish and manage to land a few small one.I can say that they re like a GT in the most snag territories...a mangrove estuaries....fast....and powerful....the tactic mostly trolling with 30-40 lbs braid with lock drag.No line given.if it manage to strip line from u....80% they will be in snag jungle with ur lure.As the fish strike most of the time the boat man will try to speed up the boat to the clear open water....if u re faster than the fish most probably u have a better chance of landing them.Anybody that hav an accounter with a mangrove jack(one of the cousin) will know how they fight....i mean really2 dirty. The closest i ve play with is the big mangrove jack that keep on busting a 50lbs mono line on straight pull on an avet.Hook up....fast run....lock drag....snap.....i only manage to land 1 fish that night. All i can say bout papuan black bass is they grow bigger, like GT on steroid, fast, fight dirty and they live in the most snagged enviroment.cheeerrss...

Henry, we'll look forward to the report  GT's on steroids...mental
Maybe it a bit over for me to say that....i've play GT near an oil platform before...they re indeed fast and strong....but they re not crazy as black bass....even when fighting them verry close to the oil platform...but most guys here will say that they play dirty as a mangrove jack with 10 x lot more power.I have watch vcd on a local guys that went after them in borneo and the old school aussie rod harisson vcd bout fishing for them....its like the fish just snap the 50lbs mono like cotton thread.have a look at this one from youtube....

I have never caught these black bass, but I will one day..........have smashed a few GTs for a bit of fun, they scrap.

Nile perch are awesome fish to see, but they don't really fight very hard - only my opinion of course, but I had some up to around 80lbs at Murchison Falls in Uganda a few years back, great fun, hugely dramatic, but the perch were not tough fighters. A fish like that uses the current of the river, they don't have brute strength alone. You could horse them big time, and our gear was not heavy.

Don't mistake the sheer weight of a big fish against sheer scrapping power.

Sounds to me that pound for pound, these black bass in PNG are some of the toughest things there are - this editor I work for, if he rates them that highly, then that's good enough for me.

Any fish up to 30lbs that takes 30 lures off an experienced lure angler, that must be an adversary worth dreaming about....

Yeah i think Henry describe it in a better words....BRUTE STRENGTH.....pound for pound in an open water i think we angler will have a bit of advantage....but them black bass (most of lutjanus will deffo do the same when hooked) love to rush back to their snag lair and here most of angler lost them fish...
