I don't know what the feelings are about the using the Lure Forum ruler that we used to buy from Mr.Fish and availability of the old official ruler. It occured to me that perhaps it might be a good idea to relax the use of the old official ruler and allow the use of some of the other types or rule/measures on the market. I have one of the flexible tape type measures that I bought on ebay that roll up to a convenient size and are easily carried around. I see the Isle Of Man lads use similar for there comps. I think this would help out any new members wishing to join the competitions. Any thoughts?

I wondered the same thing Mark. To be honest i'm not 100% sure about the accuracy of some soft tape measures, I remember reading on here recently (sorry, can't remember who posted it) that one tape measure he used had shrunk a 4-5 CM over a season after coming into contact with salt water, obviously not ideal. I've read other threads about how accurate or not it is to measure fish with various rulers. I guess with everyone using the same system you have a level playing field. However, whatever make the comp easier to enter and take part in has to be encouraged. I'd also like peoples opinions on this so thanks for raising the subject.
Sure this has been discussed in previous threads. From what I remember the minus points of a soft tape were the accuracy of the reading with the creases in it and the fact that the tape could be folded over, underneath the fish, to make it seem bigger. Not suggesting any of the guys on here would do that, just that it could be open to abuse. With the rigid rule what you see is the true length. I would say that I would like a rigid rule but with bigger, more easily read numbers on it. Trying to photograph a lively fish, especially if fishing alone at night, and get the pic so the numbers are clearly visible, can be a nightmare. The rule we have now but with the 50, 60 70, etc in big numbers and the cm inbetween just as a black line would mean the length could be read easily from the main digit up, by counting the lines. I realise people wouldn't want to go to the expense of getting a new ruler made but with bigger, clearer numbers even a slightly "iffy" photo would be good enough.

Good points Paul. Yeah, trying to read the measurements in photos entered is a challenge to say the least! Especially with more of us fishing at night or in low light. Most of us are using mobile phones for taking quick snaps so it's tricky. I'm aware that it's going be even trickier to adjudicate if we're all using different methods to measure fish. I like the rigid rulers for all the reasons you highlighted but they are a pain in the ass to carry and pack sometimes.
Martin, I think just the nature of the job, ie accurately measuring a live fish, often in darkness, is always going to present problems. There's never going to be one easy, universal method.

It has to be rigid rulers if you want accurate measurements.
A tape over a fish adds quite a bit of length.

I knew I had been doing things wrong, a flexy tape and a axe will see me getting a 80 this year
