I always thought the rulers made a few quid for the forum and that is why they were used for comps
Really not sure about that Dave, if that was the case I'm pretty sure it's not now.
That's good news. We may as well stick with the the Mr Fish rulers in that case.
It has to be rigid rulers if you want accurate measurements.
A tape over a fish adds quite a bit of length.

I wasn't referring to the B.A.S.S. type tape Tom, but I do understand that they won't be easy to use on uneven surfaces. They do pack away to a pocket size item though.

That's the type of numbers I would like. Even if the small numbers along the edge weren't there you could still easily work out the length. Pity they're not available on a rigid ruler. Or are they? Where are the yellow tapes available, Mark?

Where did you get the yellow one Mark? That is just what I have been after, the rigid forum ruler has knackered my overboard bag

Ebay item 141631211350. Originally bought it to measure Pike (goes to 125cm), but then, just like Bass, you need to know if it's a double or a 20 in the case of Pike, so you end up weighing anyway. I think The Lure Lounge do one similar, but it's printed green on black, so not as clear.
Another vote for the rigid ruler.
Much fairer for everyone IMO.
Never liked carrying in my bag though and hard to store if using the yak so with a few0 modifications such as rounding off the sharp corners a bit and drilling a small hole with carabiner I can now attach it to the outside of my gear or leash to the yak

How about something like the yellow tape with the bigger numbers stuck onto the rigid rule? Might need a bit of trimming but would be a lot clearer (and rigid). Guess it would depend on the cost of the yellow tape and probably whether everyone already has the old rule. Alternatively, get another rigid rule made with bigger numbers but this is all adding to the cost. Not an easy problem to solve, methinks!
Why fix something that ain't broke,
Yes. My thoughts on an alternative ruler were based on Mick at Mr Fish not having any, or very few of the TLF rulers in stock seeing as he is no longer a sponsor. An alternative ruler may have been easier for many of the new members to aquire. Plus I'm not chopping up my yellow tape. That is good for all bar the Bass comp.

This is the simplest solution I can come up with. Anyone that has a rule just needs to get some numbers, these are from fleabay, around £2 inc p&p, and stick them on. Maybe a coat of clear to seal them in but the card comes with ten of each number 0-9 so you would have enough to re-do the numbers if they wore out over time. My ruler, unfortunately, only comes out the bag 3 or 4 times a year:redface:. And before any smart-arses make the comment, I know I could probably just stick the 50 and 60 on but it's just to show what a "proper" bass angler's rule would look like!

An alternative tweak to the Lure Forum ruler could be to use some red nail varnish and indicate the eg. 10cm divisions by painting a red line over the think black line between the numbers on both sides. The print size of the numbers are not so important when you can see the 40, 50, 60, 70 division marks etc. to work out the actual tail position of the fish.

On another note - does anyone know if the Silver Six Nations competition will be running this year?
