I was wondering how the members go about choosing which lure to use. So do you clip on an old favourate, that has caught in the past?? Do you try and match the size/shape/colour of any bait that is present??
Or is your choice based on the depth of water, if so do you go shallow first or deep first??
Or is it a case of trying your latest shiny purchase, get chucked first??

The $64million question Dave.

Thought process goes along the lines of:-

- what fish?
- how far away?
- time of day?
- how deep?
- how much current?
- likely prey fish/food in the area?
- how fast a fall rate?
- how fast a retrieve rate?
- water clarity?
- weed in the water?
- how rough?
- nuisance fish?
- sky colour?
- lure size?
- lead head size (gr and hook size)?
- lure colour?
- extra attractant?


...bugger, missed the tide.

Well that explains why you catch so many fish-Attention to detail!!!
For me, a flyfishing background has taught me to "match the hatch", but I happily fall back on old faithful lures until I get enough detail to make a better choice.

Actually I find myself telling myself not to think about it too much. Instinctive fishing is much more fun.

Yes do have the odd favourite lure and will tend to use them first on new marks. Just to move fish so I know that there's fish there. Then I get down to trying to match the hatch and the right retrieve. (Then bag up I wish lol).

I start on top and work my way down. Latley i have caught all my Bass on xlayers fished close to the bottom and have had no interest at all nearer the surface or mid water.
