Doug is off to India in a few weeks and wants some decent wire leaders. We have some here that are 15kg and are for Pike etc, will these do for India? I have no idea what fish he will be catching but he is only taking a travel spin rod with standard braid and bass style plugs. He is going top Goa if that helps and his mate out there said they are catching alot of salmon? at the moment to 10lb.

We have been experimenting with short flouro leaders around 50lbs as bite leaders for pike this year - a bit more user friendly and we are yet to lose a fish yet!
Any ideas on what Doug is targetting?
Alex, take my friendly advice and stay away from the stuff as I can guarantee you it’s only a question of time before you will have a bite off. Even with 100 to 150Ib fluorocarbon leaders bite offs occur from time to time and I rather catch a few fish less rather than leave one with a lure or fly stuck in its mouth.

Many American Musky anglers swear by fluorocarbon leader but when they are pushed most of them will reluctantly admit that they have experienced bite offs. A few weeks ago you could see the Fishing Adventurer fishing for pike in Canada using a 100Ib fluorocarbon leader and when the smallish pike bit straight through the leader he quickly changed to a metal leader.

Mick,
If he is fishing saltwater out there then take some 50-60lb wire leaders, Ideally IMHO the titanium flexible single strand stuff.
This stuff works great for cuda, small sharks, For the rest of the time I would reconmend using a fluro leader about 15" long of between 40-80lb. A hard compound fluro if he can get some (Seaguar Hard Compound).

From what I understand of the freashwater fishing, even for the bigger stuff, he will need only a rubbing leader of 20-30lb mono. Although IF he can find some Snakehead fishing then light wire leaders (same as for pike) are needed.

Jordonis3r,
I with Vidar on the fluro leaders, only a matter of time. Pike don't seem to be leader shy, can I ask why the experiment??

I presume that Doug is going with a Hart travel rod Mick :) :) :)

Maybe Henry could advise? or Keith?

At a guess I would say they are talking about Threadfin Salmon, A REALLY hard fighting fish, which will readily take plugs/spinners.

Great stuff guys, thank you. And Squid I didnt think about the Hart travel rods for him, being the cheap skate that I am I have given him two cheap Masterline rods, maybe youre right, those Hart Bloody Treks are great, and once he has used it I get to keep it for when I travel....

When i have to use wire leaders i.e Blue Fish, Barracuda Spanish Mackeral's e.t.c the guides in the Keys all use Marlin Hard wire single strand, this is connected to the Hook/Lure with a "hay wire" twist and to the line/leader with an Albright knot, the reason behind this is if you use a swivel/clip on the retrieve it causes a"bubble" the fish hits this and you get "bite off''s".......it's true, I have some 60lb test wire and if you want a couple of mts PM me and I'll send you some
