What are Major Craft rods like?

So it's winter and with a bellyful of work and a baby on the way I can't get out fishing, and the next best alternative is to spend endless hours considering my next rod purchase, when I probably don't need one anyway....

All that said, I'm looking at a rod for SPs to complement my Teklon 802. The likes of the Century or even the ESG range are out of reach of my wallet, but mooching around the internet I've found a few interesting rods in the Major Craft range that seem to suit my budget (maybe €150) desired length (7'6" to 8'6") and desired casting weight (5g/7g to 25g/28g).

So are Major Craft rods any good? Have read what little I could find but can't dig up any in-depth reviews of the latest generation.

Or anyone else any tips on what to look at? I am looking for a rod that will primarily be used to fish texas-rigged softies, sluggos, wave worms, xlayers etc in estuary marks for bass, but that can also fire out a hard lure when needed, or even be used to have a bash at wrasse on lures if I get the time and the inclination.

Or just fish away with the Teklon and eventually upgrade to that Megabass rod that has caught my eye because of a recent blog post singing its praises.

Winter. Pfff.

I've had a waggle of that Yasei in the shop alright Sean, and did really like it, lovely in the hand and a real looker. Probably the same one that the lad from Kinsale bought...

So yeah, the dropshots would be under consideration alright but I'm still casting the net a bit wider. There's something about the Shimanos that's just not getting me excited. God forgive me but I think I just fancy something a bit more... 'exotic'. You know how it is...

Completely understand that Conor :p:p The Dropshot is a good rod though and well under budget. Don't know about this 'Yasel' tag though?

I know Mark Sleep has a Majorcraft rod and he rates it highly.
I would PM Vidar for rod questions, he is the font of all knowledge after all! ;)

Yarra I've little else to spend it on. I don't go to the pub and herself buys my clothes, so...

I don't know about the 'Yasei' tag either. It was white. And shexy. Maybe Yasei is Japanese for 'white and shexy'

Vidar is there one in the current range that jumps out at you as being suitable for the tasks described? I'm looking at:

or

or

http://www.proluresdirect.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=684&category_id=78&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=3

but the last one might overlap a little too much with my Teklon.

All other suggestions welcome, I'd never heard of Major Craft before yesterday so who knows what else I have overlooked.

The first is a bit over your budget but the second is right in.
I have their budget lrf rod, the Solpara SPS-S732M, which is made in China. The thing is though it is still so good, lovely feel, light and sensitive. I reckon it could handle a decent fish to. I am currently looking at buying another rod and am seriously considering another MC.

It would be worth you calling proluresdirect for a chat as I'd been considering one rod some months ago but it was out of the stock and the owner seems to use these rods himself so should be able to give you some detailed info about what would be suitable for the fishing that you intend to use one for. While I've been researching rods this year whenever Major Craft was mentioned there never seemed to be a bad word against them.

I have a couple of Majorcraft rods. At first I was a bit suspicious of them, they almost seem like they are too good for the money. I have a Crostage Light Jigging (boat) rod and a Days Baitcaster. Both have Fuji reelseats and SICs and excellent build quality for the money. Very pleased with both of them.

Hi Conor,

i don't know the specific rod you look for buth my personal expirience with Major Craft is good. Good rod for good price also.
Over here we fish a loth with softbaits from the shore and us rods from 3 to 3,6 meters (around 10 or 11 feeth)
I bought a rod from Major Craft after broken 3 shimano Speedmasters and a Beastmaster and will never go back.
I own a Triple Cross and love this rod for this type of fishing for seabass.

@Leo Goddard

The rod is not heavy for his lenght and has a good fast action.
I use this rod for fishing with sofbaits and jigheads in 12 till 45 grams of weight.
You can also cast a spoon or a iron jigg with it.

I never use it for fishing with hardbait lures. For lure fishing i prefer a shorter rod to keep the tip down.
On a loth of spots here i need the 10 feeth of lengt to lift the fish over the structure and weeds under my feed.

The quality is good. After 3 seasons without cleaning it al the fuji eyes still look good.

Interesting stuff Mark,
How do you know where the Majorcraft rods are being made-I understood they were VERY quiet about those details.
