Yeah bad stuff I reckon. Good liquid grease fella, that's what you needs I think. Fixed mine today a treat after it had been grinding, had to wait for it to arrive though.

I always grease my knob too Barry, but I rarely wash my tackle after use.

 

A good splash of red bull does mine fine "is it reels were still on about"....lol.....

Mixed opinions it seems!!! I'm talking about just a few drops into the service port on the reel. I dont want to f uck it up though!!!

Anything is better than nothing and i would think it will be ok. The only thing i would avoid is wd40.

 

Any oil that eventually 'gums' is not a clever idea. WD40 and 3-in-1 fall into that category.
I use Daiwa reel-4 grease (got it on ebay)

trouble is 3in one is not a propper fully synthetic oil and won't like saltwater,nor will it stay where you put it.

I just read an article in the August issue of an Irish angling mag I occasionally buy (Irish Angler's Digest) on fixed spool maintenance by a Mark Madden. Anyway he is of the opinion (or at least his friend Paul Smyth is) that specialist wet (not the dry type) mountain biking oils are better than general/tackle shop oils. His reasoning is that they are designed for wet and extreme conditions but are still of a fine consistency. I'm not sure as the bottle of oil in the photo is partially obscured but it looks suspiciously like Finish Line Wet Lubricant (I have a bottle for my Mountain Bike) and it is available from most bike shops:

Might be worth a try for the more adventurous. I'd say there is probably a lot more money spent on research by the bike lube manufacturers than the tackle companies.

For my multipliers I use Reel-X for spool bearings, one drop on a CLEAN bearing is sufficient, many people make the mistake of soaking bearings in oil, that only causes them to run slower. All other bearings and surfaces (apart from drag washers) are treated to a marine grease. The bearings are cleaned and packed, using a bearing packer, surfaces get a smear from a small paint brush loaded with grease. For general cleaning I use Salt-X and Corrosion-X, to clean bearings I use lighter fluid and/or carb cleaner, an air duster and then let them air-dry thoroughly before undertaking any lube work.
